Beautiful Northern New Jersey

We arrived in Branchville New Jersey around noonish on 3 November 2023 and that gave us the afternoon to check things out along with a full day the next day. The last 5 miles of the trip to the campground were narrow, winding and steep. It's called Mountain Road. It was sunny in New Jersey, which we had not had much in the New England states. We ventured out the afternoon we arrived to see Dingman's Falls and Historic Dingman's Ferry site which now has a one lane toll bridge over the Delaware River. On our way back to the campground we turned onto Sunrise Mountain Road, which turned out to be a narrow 16 mile long one way road, but it is a tourist destination for sunrises. We were there closer to sunset and somewhat tired from traveling that day, so we passed on the mountain overlook. While on Sunrise Mountain Road, two black bears ran across the road in front of us! We didn't get pictures of them on the road because we were so surprised and we were driving, but Steve got one of them as they scurried into the woods.

Steve had specific things he wanted to see in the area containing 40 miles of the Scenic Middle Delaware River, but we found it to be somewhat confusing to navigate using GPS and with being so close to winding roads between Delaware River, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. We drove by High Point State Park, the highest elevation in NJ. Steve wanted to do a hike on the Appalachian trail of the NJ side, but we ended up on the PA side. For Anita who is geographically and directionally challenged, it was par for the course, but Steve was confounded by seeing where he wanted to be on a map, but not getting to it. We found a couple of great waterfalls and ended up hiking on a vehicle road that was closed due to a rock slide. It is a scenic road, so it was just as beautiful walking. We would have liked to hike on the Appalachian Trail again, but the parking lot was full and Anita had tweaked her ankle that morning, not to mention the part of it we found was rocky and straight up. The Delaware Water Gap is proposed to become a National Park but the locals had displayed signs that they were opposed to a new National Park in their backyard.

We went to mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Branchville, NJ and this picture shows what's behind the church. We would have liked to know who it is in the statue with the deer, but it's surrounded by water. St. Hubert is the patron saint of hunters, so we're thinking that's who's in the statue.
