We've been in Brownsville since the end of January and it's been very windy many days since we got here. We can count on one hand, the number of days it was calm with a gentle breeze. The temperatures got into the high 90's and even reached 100 last week (March 1st)! We've enjoyed exploring the area and finding fishing spots to try. There are lots of places to fish from shore, piers, and jetties. We've tried fishing some, but it's been slow with catching lots of smaller fish, but only a few keepers.
Steve caught about 20 little guys before these two keepers
In our travels around Brownsville, we've noticed several resacas. What's a "resaca", I wondered when I was first told that, so I looked it up... "Resaca is the name given to a type of oxbow lake in the southern half of Cameron County, Texas. The resacas constitute former river channels of the Rio Grande and are naturally cut off from the river, having no inlet or outlet." Apparently, these resacas are found only here in Cameron County. It's nice to see them and there are many homes built with resacas for a view. They are home to alligators and not recommended for fishing out of due to being dirty.

We started our time in Brownsville at Breeze Lake Campground and we met lots of nice people. We went fishing with Ron and Lynn one day, and out to dinner with Chuck and Maria one night. The campground had lots of activities and we attended a few during the month we were there. Steve was even a judge for the chili cookoff on Super Bowl 2023 Sunday. There are a few regulars at Breeze Lake who like to sing Karaoke and they're pretty good. There was a "Not so Talented Talent Show" just before we left there and it was a lot of laughs. We had a good time at Breeze Lake, but didn't really like how close to each other we were packed in, and roads were narrow making it hard to walk without having to move off the road to let vehicles go by. We moved to another park, 4 Seasons, just a couple of miles from Breeze Lake. 4 Seasons is laid out better for long walks and has more amenities, so we're liking it here too. We've also met very nice people at 4 Seasons. Lots of the couples we've met are from Canada and they've come down to south Texas for many winters. Many of them are older and have done the traveling that awaits us. We've gotten recommendations on places to see and even a couple of invitations to stay in their yard if we pass by them.
We had a great dinner at Louie's Backyard on South Padre Island one Saturday (not during Spring Break). We attended the Charro Days parade on Saturday Feb 25th. Charro Days is a week long celebration of the friendship between Brownsville TX and Matamoros Mexico. The week long celebration ends with a big parade (2.5 hours) on the Saturday. We found a great spot with a little shade to enjoy the festivities.
