We arrived at Fredericksburg Texas on Tuesday 18 March 2025. We learned about Fredericksburg several months ago. It is a town strongly influenced by the German settlers of the 1840's. There are several German restaurants and a couple of German bakeries. The styles of houses and downtown buildings have quite a bit of a traditional German look. We came to Fredericksburg on our circuitous route to Livingston, where we'll be for two weeks taking care of annual doctor and dental appointments. We stayed at Ladybird Johnson Municipal Park, which has an RV Park, baseball fields, a dog park, pickleball courts and a pool. It's a huge park for recreation. We hiked the nature trail in the park Thursday 20 March.
Our first day for site seeing (19 March) in Fredericksburg we had to do some much needed grocery shopping. We had been in remote places in Texas with no large grocery stores since the end of February. We'd only bought staples like milk and bananas. That afternoon we went to the National Museum of the Pacific War in downtown Fredericksburg. We found that a whole day would be needed to thoroughly see this museum. We saw what we could till it closed at 5pm and then found the local Catholic church, St. Mary's. We went back to see the outdoor exhibits at the National Museum of the Pacific War after hiking on the trail at Ladybird Municipal Park on Thursday (20 March).
St. Mary's Catholic Church is a historic site in Fredericksburg. The church's website says St. Mary's Catholic Church began with a handful of German immigrants in 1846. The famous twin towers of the two churches, the Marienkirche (1861) and the new St. Mary’s (1908), have long been beacons of faith, hope, and love in Fredericksburg and throughout the Texas Hill Country. On June 21, 1983, St. Mary's Catholic Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
After seeing the church it was about dinner time, so we went out to eat at a German restaurant, of course. During the day we had gotten recommendations and opted for Der Lindenbaum. We had delicious meals: Jägerschnitzel for Anita and a butcher's platter with sauerkraut for Steve.

For our last day of site seeing, we wanted to hike Enchanted Rock about 17 miles north of Fredericksburg. Reservations are required for that park and none were available for the 21st (our only available day). Many state and national parks have been inundated with spring breakers, so we're pretty sure they got all the reservations for Enchanted Rock. We decided to go to Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. We hiked the nature trail, watched a short film and then drove to see a little more of the historic buildings. We have a long drive tomorrow (22 March) to Livingston, so we wanted to take it easy this afternoon.
