We arrived at the Mitchell SD KOA Journey on 29 Aug 2024 for two nights. Originally, we had one night there on our way to the Badlands, but we left Iowa a day earlier after plans changed there. So, we had a day to see Mitchell South Dakota. We really enjoyed our one day of site seeing. We drove 10 miles East on I90 to see the Fatima Family Shrine in Alexandria SD. This is a peaceful place in the middle of a small town. We enjoyed walking the grounds and seeing the inside of the church.

We fueled up the truck for our trip to Interior South Dakota on Saturday 31 Aug. We also got a few staples at the Super Walmart since it was there. It’s convenient to get RV specific items and groceries at the same place. Driving around Mitchell, we both commented that it’s a nice size city. Before heading home, we drove around Lake Mitchell, with a surface area of 671 acres and maximum depth of 29 feet.
After lunch at our place, we went to Mitchell’s world-famous Corn Palace. The theme for the palace is changed every year and the first corn palace was built in 1892! The Corn Palace is a prominent building next door to the City Hall and serves as a venue for large crowds like at sporting events, rodeos, and even weddings. Admission is free and it’s interesting to see. We would not have driven to specifically see this, but we enjoyed it since it was right in the town we were staying.
