Pictou was a "Take Two"

We arrived at Harbour Lights Campground in Pictou Nova Scotia on 3 July 2024. Getting our fifth wheel into the waterfront site they gave us was easier said than done. With our 20ft truck and 30ft camper, we didn't have enough room to just pull up and back in to the site. So, Steve backed all the way out of the lane we'd be on and back up the hill to the area where he could turn around and back all the way down the hill and down the lane into our site. A few neighbors were out watching as this process took place and a couple of them later congratulated Steve on his "backing up" skills. After we got set up, we had a beautiful view and we sat outside and read our books for a while to relax and decompress.

On the 4th of July, we did our grocery shopping at the Super Walmart in New Glasgow and we were almost done when an announcement came over the loud speaker saying that their computer systems were down and that they could not check us out. We hoped it would be a quick fix, so we finished up our shopping and got in line. It turned out they could accept cash or debit cards at that point, so Steve went to get in line for the ATM to get more cash. The ATM ran out of cash, but they could take debit cards. That is, until we were second in line to check out when all their scanner systems went down again! So, we put back all of our cold things and put our cart in line for them to put the rest of our items back. Take Two: We shopped again at Sobeys, a local grocery store. We couldn't get the RV specific items we needed there, but we got enough for the week's meals.

The rest of our days in Pictou were getting out when we could around rain showers. We walked around Pictou on the Friday, opening day of the Lobster Carnival. We checked out a couple of the local museums. We were stuck indoors all day on Saturday with constant heavy rain, so we went out to attend 6pm mass at Stella Maris Catholic Church in Pictou. We arrived when mass was just about over at 5:40pm. It turned out that on one Saturday in the year (Lobster Carnival weekend), mass is held at 5pm. So on Sunday...Take Two: we attended mass at 10am. We walked around the carnival streets after mass and walked the Jitney Trail. At 6:45pm Sunday night the parade that was postponed from 6:45pm Saturday night took place, and we attended that. After mass on Sunday morning, they had refreshments for socializing and we had attended that. A guy there told Steve about fishing spots close to the campground, so Steve tried those fishing spots on July 8th. He didn't have any luck till the last try around 9pm, but he said there were tons of mosquitoes. At the spot right behind our camper, it was the deer flies and fruit flies that chased him away.

On our last day in Pictou, we started the hike to Munroes Island at Caribou–Munroes Island Provincial Park. It was really a walk on the beach, but we turned back about half way because it was so hot and humid. We did that before finding the Loch Broom Log Church Westville. It was constructed on the site of the first Presbyterian Church as a commemorative replica in 1973.

We leave tomorrow (July 10th) so this afternoon was spent putting away our outdoor rugs and doing things that need to be done before we hook up. We're heading to Grand Barachois New Brunswick as our time in the Maritime Provinces is winding down.

It was fun reading what you did in Pictou, as we were there in June and had a very different one-night experience! Safe travels and keep up the blog!
