We arrived at Rock Springs Wyoming on 22 September 2024. We stayed at the Sweetwater Events Complex which has three campgrounds with a total of 1,200 campsites. We stayed in the Pilot Butte Campground. Most of the 1,200 campsites have the water shut off due to winter temperatures at night. We drove through Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons National Park to get there. We had left at 7am from Gardiner Montana and we saw temps as low as 23 in the higher elevations of Yellowstone before 9am. By the time we got to Rock Springs Wyoming, the temperature inside the camper was 89! This time of year out west the temperature-swings in a day can be extreme! We saw lots of patches of yellow and orange leaves on our drive, but couldn’t get a picture to do the beauty justice. We had to drive 45mph through both national parks, so almost two thirds of our trip was slow but breathtakingly beautiful. The last hundred miles or so were quite boring with just desert-looking Wyoming country side for miles and miles. Every once in a while, we’d see pronghorn antelope to break the monotony. Steve says Wyoming has the highest concentration of pronghorn antelope in the US.

Our stay in Wyoming was somewhat of a maintenance stop with grocery shopping, washing the truck, getting Steve’s RX refilled and Anita’s pedicure. We also made some calls to find out about renewing our vehicle registrations in TX. Turns out the requirement for vehicle inspections for Texas renewals will be going away in January 2025. In the meantime, we just check the box “out of state” when renewing online.
We did venture out for one day of site seeing. We drove on Hwy 530 south to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area which is located in the northeast corner of Utah and southwest corner of Wyoming. Most of our drive to get there was in Wyoming, but we crossed into Utah about 2 miles from the Gorge. The drive was beautiful, but in the Flaming Gorge Country and the Sheep Creek Canyon Geological Loop the views were beyond words, even bringing a tear rolling down Anita’s cheek a couple of times. We took lots of pictures, but we really didn’t feel we could do the beauty justice. I’m putting the map of where we drove in case anyone wants to experience this themselves. We did a couple of nature hikes and then had lunch at a scenic overlook before heading back. We drove over the dam on our way home, but with construction in that area, we didn’t get a good look. We also saw wild horses in the Flaming Gorge country, but didn't react quickly enough to get a picture.
