The Trek Back East to Port Arthur Texas

Our last night at El Centro 5 Mar 2024

On 6 March 2024, we began the journey to Port Arthur Texas (1447 miles). Our reservation there is for 10 March - 4 April 2024. In southern Texas the plan is to rest, take care of admin things like doctor and dentist appointments, camper maintenance, repairs, saltwater fishing, get our mail, etc.

We planned about 300 miles a day and one night stays along the way. We stopped in Tucson at Cactus Country RV Park again and had dinner with our friends Patrick and Cathy. They picked Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse in Trail Dust Town, a historical outdoor shopping center in Tucson and we had a nice evening with them and a beautiful AZ sunset.

On 7 Mar 2024, our journey continued with a stop in Las Cruces New Mexico. The campground we thought we had a reservation with couldn't find it, so they found us a spot a couple of miles away at Shady Acres RV Park.

The next day (8 Mar 2024) we stopped in Balmorhea Texas because we wanted to check out Balmorhea State Park. On our way to El Centro when we'd stayed at Fort Sam Houston, they'd told us about the natural hot springs pool at Balmorhea. The park's website says "Dive into the crystal-clear water of the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool. Swim, scuba dive, or just relax under the trees at this historic park in arid West Texas". When we arrived, the park ranger said the water is 74 degrees year round. The air temp was in the low 60's, so Anita opted to read a book while Steve went in the water. It turned out to be too cold even for Steve, so he came out after only a few minutes. We walked around to see the wildlife viewing area at the park, and the camping area they're upgrading. It'll be a nice campground with about 35 sites. We'll keep it in mind for the future.

On our way back to the campground on a service road, Steve spotted a road runner! It moved with us and finally hopped up on a little hiss for a better picture.

On 9 Mar 2024, we stayed in Seguin Texas. We were both pretty tired from the travel schedule over the past several days, so we were fine with doing nothing here. Finally, on 10 Mar 2024 we headed for Port Arthur Texas, our home for 25 nights! Next post will be after we leave Port Arthur April 4th. We're off to explore this area and enjoy some R&R.
